It's true. During the station's final years when Bob Cohen and Mike
Siegal held the Interim Operating Authority for the stations (am 900
and fm 106.3 after Eastminster Broadcasting lost the licenses in
1978), there was no money for new equipment. We purchased some used
processing and top-40 music on cart from another station that had
changed formats. We had a stereo generator and simply turned it on.
Later we experimented with an Orban Stereo Synthesizer.....really
just a comb filter that split the audio up into different bands
sending a different mix to the left and right channels. The station
known as FM 106 did a personality Top 40 from late 1980 until 1982.
It was a time when nobody was playing the hits, a recession had
established stations playing it safe..up and down the dials all that
was available was AC or at the other extreme WCOZ. We were young and
rebellious and had fun. Oh by the way Bump...It's a 19Khz signal
for a stereo pilot.
