That was a very interesting radio station to say the least. I would NOT
be surprised if this aforementioned FM station would put a 19kHz pilot
tone to fool everyone's stereo radio that is was a stereo station. IT
WAS NOT. The equipment was from the stone age. It was the poor step-sister
of the Eastminster Broadcasting Corporation (EBC), famous for their "Direct
Line News". Ironically, their other FM station WDNH-FM (97.5/Dover...now
the famous WOKQ) was a state of the art facility. It signed-on in May of
1971 with probably one of the best stereo signals (audio wise) around. It
began as a combination MOR/Country favored station...a very interesting
mix indeed. Where else could you hear "Windy" from the Association followed
by a Buck Owens tune and then hear "Ma Belle Amie" from the Tee-Set. It
went full Country later in the Summer of that year. The good thing about
WDNH was that it filled the "hole" between the Seacoast and the White
Mountains with stereo music...something that was very lacking at the time.
WMTW-FM (now WHOM) still had holes in their monster coverage area in that
era.
WOTW-FM, while they tried to make a go of it with Top-40, was doomed
to failure. EBC lost the license to operate that station due to some
alleged improprieties with the FCC and had to sell their stations at rock
bottom prices. WDNH was no problem due to it's great signal and built-in
audience. WOTW-AM and FM were another matter due to their close proximity
to Boston and Manchester. The stations wound up in bankruptcy for years
until they lost their transmitter site in 1984 for condos. The stations
were silent for many years. The FM is now WHOB and the AM stayed silent
for a few more years. Both stations are now separately owned and operated.
