Are you sure?  I was living in Manchester in the late 60s, and had no
trouble picking up WMEX when they went 50 kW.  Didn't notice any particular
improvement in their signal, but it didn't get any worse either.  Certainly
didn't have the signal of WRKO or WBZ, but came in fine on a portable.  I
don't remember them having much of a night signal with 50k, but they didn't
before either....
