Sports on the Radio

GAWollman wrote "It is still clear that there is nobody in this country who
announces
hockey as well as the best baseball announcers announce baseball."

I agree with this statement but it is partly the nature of the game.
Baseball is perfect for the radio, weaving stories, painting pictures and
all. Hockey is more fast paced and forces the announcers to stick mainly to
describing the action.

One of the best hockey announcers is not currently doing the game. Dale
Arnold starting out doing hockey on the radio in Maine and is excellent.

Someone mentioned Gary Thorne. He is an interesting story. He was an
attorney in Bangor, Maine who had done some University of Maine games on the
radio. He was in his late 30's when his friend Jordan Kobritz bought a AAA
baseball team and moved it to Maine. Thorne did the Guides games on the
radio for a couple of years and then got a job doing the Mets games on the
radio. The rest is history. He gives all want-to-be sportscasters hope.
