So called 'Smooth Jazz'...????

Yeah, when did the term 'Smooth' Jazz become a type of music?  I understood
it to be a radio 'marketing' word....trying to sell the format to the
listeners.  

But I've heard listeners even use the term to describe what kind of music
they like...

When they say they like 'Smooth Jazz'...I always wonder what they don't like?
 "Bumpy Jazz"? "Rocky Jazz"?
