I will not share the subscriber list, however, because (1) I was never given permission to do so, and (2) there are a lot of unattended or invalid mailboxes on it. Both public and private groups run a risk of posts from various spammers and scammers, so that requires attention. Having two or three admins to provide to provide responsive coverage is important. I'm on one of those, moved over from a Yahoo group. Seems okay. I think you just volunteered. As for me, I joined back when Todd Gross was being pushed out of his lead meteorologist roll at Channel 7 and I never got around to leaving. My main relevant radio experience was my first job while in high school to set up microphones at area churches for remote Sunday broadcasts for WPVL (Painesville, OH). These days it's mostly listening to WBZ and their traffic reports - and being glad I live in new Hampshire! It has been interesting hearing from the people here who have been around since the olde days like Donna and Scott. Whatever happens, I likely won't tag along. Thanks for all the fish. -Ric From markwa1ion@aol.com Sat Dec 2 14:35:47 2023 From: markwa1ion@aol.com (Mark Connelly) Date: Sat, 2 Dec 2023 19:35:47 +0000 (UTC) Subject: Shutdown of boston-radio-interest list In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: <2135991298.11092480.1701545747685@mail.yahoo.com> I have been a loyal reader of, and occasional contributor to, this list over the past two decades and then some. As an avid Boston area radio listener since the age of 10 (I'm 74 now) and one who has worked in semiconductor and test / measurement / communications equipment industries that often support broadcasting's technical side, I have thoroughly enjoyed the discussions from so many different viewpoints: broadcast professionals (present and past), fans of certain programs and formats, radio hobby / technical enthusiasts etc. Intelligent posts relatively free of criticism and sniping have been the byword. Most often there has been a spirit of helpfulness in providing information about history (radio, music, sports, Boston/New England news events), present-day station and personality activities, FCC and other legal matters, and technical advances. Back when I lived in Billerica I attended the group's get together at Gary's Ice Cream in Chelmsford. Way back in the '70s I'd met Donna Halper at a WCAS live broadcast at a supermarket in Cambridge. Subsequently my wife and I had attended a couple of her presentations at local libraries. It was great to see Donna again. Dan Strassberg was there at Gary's. He and I had many discussions on the group about technical matters such as antenna efficiency, salt water enhancement of propagation, and so on. He had matters covered from the industry side and I from the DX hobbyist side (over 100 countries heard since 1960 on the standard AM broadcast band from metro-Boston and the Cape). When I later read of Dan's passing I considered that a big loss to radio, just as when we recently lost Bob Bittner. Speaking of Bob, I remember many discussions with him as well. He understood DXing and he had an inexhaustible memory bank of music knowledge. He kidded around with me about my attempts to get him to play my favorite singer, early '60s British teenage star Helen Shapiro. He did eventually put a few of her songs on the radio. The fact that she only had one Billboard entry in '61 held him back a bit. Some of you are regularly on Facebook. Kevin Vahey of TV sportscasting fame comes to mind and I see Donna Halper and several others posting there as well. I am on several "io" groups and find them very easy to use. A big benefit of them over either this platform or Facebook is the easy attachment of audio, video, photo, and document (PDF/DOC/PPT) files. If something is set up I'll enthusiastically join. I have a large stash of survey chart scans and airchecks that I could gradually post when suiting a discussion in progress. When this list started in 1997 I'd just started a great job at Analog Devices. Stayed there 13 years. I began there by programming racks of shiny new Rohde & Schwarz, Agilent, Tektronix, and Boonton test instruments and designing RF/microwave boards. "Tubthumping" (Chumbawumba) and "Bittersweet Symphony" (Verve) were blasting out of my car radio in afternoon drive. Sometimes after work I'd drive out to Granite Pier in Rockport, MA to DX the AM band out of my car. The online world then was quite a bit different from now, that's for sure. Seems like forever ago. To all (and especially those I may never see or hear from again), best wishes for your holidays, the New Year, and whatever follows. Your efforts are greatly appreciated. As many have mentioned in their comments, a lot has changed in the industry since this list started and social media and other group chat sites have become more of a way to share opinions than a mailing list. I too recall the group gathering we had at Gary?s Ice Cream followed by the live broadcast of his WCAP Saturday Night Sock Hop show from the parking lot in his trailer that you could say brought back memories of the WBZ Sundeck Studio trailer. A lot of information, opinions, technical talk, remembrances of and tributes to radio folks (both members of this list and non-members) who passed on were shared here. I hope to continue sharing news and thoughts on the industry on the new groups.io site that Bob DeMattia has graciously offered to set up (Thank You Bob for doing so). And Thank You to all on this list who contributed to many informative and fun conversations. Broadcasting was experiencing paroxysms of consolidation, which has largely now ended, but was still quite vibrant and the medium through which many if not most people were exposed to news, new music, and political views. In the Internet, it was still reasonably possible for anyone to operate public services like web and mail servers on pretty much any machine that had a full-time network connection. Late '60s into the '70s a FCC First Phone was more valuable than a college degree to get your foot in the door. Over the years we have lost long-time posters - I think of Dan and Lawrence in particular but there were many others. If you were a night owl as I have always been radio was a big part of your life. I can type WO9-8989 and many of you know exactly what I am referring to. I remember being dumbfounded as a teen at a prep school in Woonsocket and unable to hear WICE Providence which was 13 miles away. I had to learn why. I remember JJ Jeffrey on WRKO in the winter at pattern change saying 'Goodbye Framingham'. Why did WTOP in Washington and WKBW Buffalo make WMEX unlistenable at night in Harvard Sq. I will always cherish the banter we have had here and maybe it will continue at another location. Radio as we knew it is not dead but it is on life support. Garrett thank you for being the caretaker of this list. Paradoxically, I have far less time than I used to for the mailing lists I'm on because I'm constantly attending to various radio stations I'm associated with: WUMB, WHRB, WZBC, my clients in Rhode Island and New Hampshire, and our stations in the Lebanon/Hanover/White River Junction market. I've enjoyed being part of htis list and will miss it. Thanks, and best wishes for 2024! The limit for free groups there is 100. Signups have slowed down to a trickle, so we should be OK. There are also a few people who have more than one email address on the list, so with some cooperation from then I could squeeze in a few more.
