AM 1700 WRKS-215 which currently has a 10 second loop saying that the station is licensed by the FCC... Admittedly the station went on a few days ago with a looped message about a Covid vaccine "pop-up", but now it is simply doing the All Station ID format. Similar to the small AM that Peabody has for parking ban info, etc. and no doubt Beverly will put it to the same use. The 1640 in Peabody also has been known to do a loop of public service announcements (Ad Council-associated, etc.) Some AMs have FM translators (WJIB and WMRC, both on 101.3) , and some like WRKO and WBZ AM are on HD2s plus of course with "the connected car" one has the ability to use one's phone to broadcast the signal via the iHeart app, TuneIn, the station's site, or so on. Ed Perry's WMEX currently is only AM or web streaming (WBMS does have an FM translator though). No AM radio in one's vehicle means no access to various AM ethnic or religious stations, the all-ESPN on WEEI AM and yes the likes of WRKO or WBZ AM _if_ you have no HD radio or bluetooth. Some cars have a 1/8" jack where you could connect maybe a walkman to play over the speakers (AUX). There are even the small mini FM transmitters connected to a Walkman that can broadcast on an open FM frequency. On Sun, Apr 18, 2021 at 12:21 PM Kaimbridge M. Casey) Date: Sun, 25 Apr 2021 18:47:25 -0400 Subject: Boston-Radio-Interest Digest, Vol 25, Issue 23 In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: My 2014 Subaru Outback , not an electric or hybrid, has an HD radio with excellent sensitivity on both AM and FM. The most incredible thing about this car is the lack of an obvious antenna and the radio still works so well. There's a small 3-4" plastic piece sticking out of the roof, but I'm convinced it uses at least, and maybe more than 1 more antenna source, maybe in the glass like early diversity recieve models had. Any manufacturer that leaves AM radio out of their offerings is foolish. The percentage of total average individual radio listening in cars and trucks has gone up substantially over the years. AM has programming content often duplicated on FM, but where the desired FM is out of reach, even young listeners will often find desired content on AM. The cost is little to add AM to any car radio. Manufacturers already must keep electric motor, and other device interference down, even to recieve FM and Sirius/XM. I almost always have to unplug my cellphone charger to receive out of town FM signals. And, most listeners are within range of a few strong AM stations that will come thru even with some interference. And, a comment about HD radio. Most of the car radios with HD have superior sensitivity, especially on FM. It is noticeable both on the Subaru OE HD radio and the Kenwood aftermarket HD radio. Both are very good on AM also. AM HD reception varies by the Stations. Some stations appear not to have their AM HD correctly adjusted (WTIC), and some are excellent (WCBS). Mark Casey, K1MAP Hampden, Mass. Hmmmm...do you think he had to UN-learn his Boston accent...or acquire a Southern accent? ? In any airchecks I have heard, I don't detect a Southern accent....wonder if Texans think he has a Boston accent? Or maybe he acquired what we used to call the "general American accent". It just happened! I now own 10 radio stations. Just closed today on WBAS AM 1240 and FM 106.5 just outside the town line of HYANNIS, CAPE COD. - A deal that has been 4 months in the making; paperwork & Federal Communications Commission approval, etc. It covers all of Cape Cod, Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard, and re-broadcasts WJIB and WJTO as a triple-cast.
