I had one of those FM converters in my car.  I bought it shortly after I
entered college on the North Shore in 1969 and kept it until well into the
'70s.  It worked like a charm.  Made by a company called Audiovox, if I

I found the same problem-- few options for clock radios.? But I was able

I went through this a couple of years ago. My conclusion is that there are no decent clock radios any more. People use their iPhones to wake them up. All the clock radios available are (1) too small, with the buttons too close together, so when you wake up groggy, you'll either hit the wrong button or knock the radio onto the floor (2) the sound quality is abysmal on them; you would never "lull yourself to sleep with soft music" on a clock radio; 1 inch speaker if you're lucky (3) not all the clock radios have battery backup, and if they do, it may not work well; my current clock radio either loses the time completely during a power failure, or speeds up so that when the power comes back, the clock is 20 minutes fast.

To wake up, I use an old fashioned wind-up Big Ben alarm clock. To listen to the radio, I have my CC radio on the bedside table.

I love my new Sony AM/FM clock radio (small cube design). Aux AM antenna works well. Environments  SFX optons. Two wake presets lets you choose volume. Display can be set to dim or go dark.

They can be found but in some cases they have FM only.I have an older Sony
AM-FM in the kitchen while the bedroom has Memorex FM only but with
bluetooth..so you might get WBZ AM etc via your smartphone and use
bluetooth to play over speakers.

I also have an HD portable in the bedroom and can get some AM stations via
HD2s...WRKO (100.7 HD2), WXKS (94.5 HD2), WBZ AM (107.9 HD2) and WRCA
Bloomberg (92.9 HD2) though if you're close enough to Boston or Newburyport
it's also on 106.1. But if the signal is iffy the HD2 cuts in and out as I
found today trying to hear WRKO via 100.7 HD2

I have an older Sony model that works great. 

In general, Sony makes really, really good radios. Glad to hear they've brought back the cube design. That was a really good one. 

If you can find an EZ-7 on eBay, it's terrific. It's an old model, probably hasn't been made in fifteen years, but super-easy to set, with actual knobs to pick the alarm time.

Hi Don,

Best Buy still has a large selection. Sony still makes 4 models with fair to 
good performance.

Sangean makes clock radios. All Sangean and CCrane models have good to very 
good AM & FM performance and some of the non-clock-radio-type models have a 
decent clock radio built in. I like my Sangean PR-D9W as a very good & 
durable do-it-all model--portable, clock radio-AM-FM-+weather radio, light 
weight, not big (6x4x1.5")but sounds very good, can recharge batteries or 
use regular batteries or ac. About $60.

too big and clunky for a nighttable.....and the later models don't have any 
buttons on the unit...you have to use a remote...and you can imagine that

Some say they may just buy a new antenna and/or transmitter and go back on
air. The woman who supposedly owns these stations may have written
"refused" on letters from the FCC about the violations.

Big City was forced to move off 101.3 when WJIB's FM translator went on.The
legitimate station was curbing their illegal one greatly, and they soon
wound up on frequencies that would soon be home to other LPFMs.

On Twitter, someone wondered "Who bought Big City?" apparently thinking Big
City had a license and apparently the "owners" sold it to Bob Bittner.

Several pirates are still on, as I noted last night on Storrow Drive..a few
on AM, and some FMs--90.1, 92.1, and 93.9 (right next to WEEI-FM).I was
told somebody heard a pirate on 91.9 when they were in Everett...WUMB's
frequency.

Was Big City operating multiple transmitters and programming feeds? I
recall Big City on 101.3, until displaced by the licensed WJIB translator,
and another pirate on 105.3.

B87 had a pretty strong signal. I could pick it up as far south as the
Derby Street exit on Route 3, maybe even a bit beyond that.

IANAL, and especially IANABL, but I've spent some time reading
financial statements, especially back during the auto bailout, so
here's what I think I understand about the process:

Contractual disputes generally get wrapped up into the bankruptcy
proceeding (there's a technical word for that that I don't know).  The
bankrupt is generally allowed to "reject" contracts that impede its
reorganization, but I don't know how this affects labor contracts.
But it's a two-way street: the bankrupt is released from its obligaton
to pay, but so is the other party, thus the bankrupt no longer
receives whatever benefit they were enjoying.  As a result, there's a
really big difference between, say, an equipment provider -- you sold
them purpose-built equipment on unsecured credit? join the back of the
line! -- and a service provider or a landlord who provides an ongoing
benefit (tower space, payroll processing, music licensing) without
which the bankrupt simply could not operate.  The bankruptcy court
does have the authority to modify those contracts in certain
circumstances, and the court can even require the other party to
perform when it has little chance of getting paid in full.

The really complicated situations happen when you get a domino effect,
where the loss of a key customer sends downstream suppliers into
bankruptcy -- since the creditor groups may be quite different and
have conflicting interests.  This was a big part of the rationale
behind the 2009 auto bailout: the networks of suppliers in that
industry are so intricate, and there are so few alternative markets
for the specialized goods and services being sold, that the bankruptcy
of a "big three" automaker would bankrupt many of its suppliers and
create protracted bankruptcy litigation that would take a decade or
more to resolve.  (As it was, GM's principal technology and parts
supplier, Delphi Automotive, did go into bankruptcy at the same time,
and the result was that several Delphi plants ended up under New GM's
ownership because GM couldn't operate without them.)

iHeart and Clear Channel before it had a practice of acquiring
companies which were critical suppliers, like automation vendors
Prophet Systems and RCS, so this is less likely to be an issue for
them, but they certainly will have an issue with service providers
like Nielsen.  Typically suppliers will demand that a bankrupt
customer pay cash up front for anything that will be provided in the
future, which is why one of the first things a company filing for
Chapter 11 does is arrange for high-interest-rate
"debtor-in-possession financing" from one or more major banks.  (The
first thing they do is get permission from the court to pay their
employees and taxes.)

One other aspect of this: sometimes labor ends up being a significant
creditor, and can negotiate with the other creditors for terms that
are more favorable in the reorganization.  You saw this with GM and
the UAW: the union ended up being a major unsecured creditor of
old-GM's and used this to get concessions from most of the other
creditors.  (A minority of dissenters took the reorganization plan to
court but lost.)  Another example familiar to many: this is exactly
how Mario Lemieux ended up owning the Pittsburgh Penguins -- the team
went into bankruptcy, and he was willing to trade his substantial
unpaid salary for a share in the ownership, post-reorganization.

These sorts of scenarios are very unlikely with iHeart simply because
so few of its employees have union representation, thus the union
would not have much bargaining power in the committee of creditors.

Unquestionably, yes.

Entercom has largely left existing management and staff alone at WCBS,
WINS, KYW, WWJ, WBBM, KCBS and KNX.

They know how to make all news radio succeed, and they're not trying to fix
what's not broken. And they actually understand how to budget for the
format, which iHeart doesn't.

I weep for my former colleagues and what's becoming of the station.

Can someone speak to the economic benefit or lack there of, of laying off Dan Rae and Bradley Jay. Does saving a few hundred thousand (at most) really benefit Iheart? Between advertising dollars and bad will, doesn't cost more money not having them on?
