The reports that said Gil was 78 appear to have stemmed from some bad
reporting when he did his last Pats games... at the time, at least one
article pegged him as having been 72 in late 2012. But the reporting on his
retirement from WBZ in early 2009 had him (correctly) as being 70 then.
All indications I can find are that he indeed died on his 80th birthday.
