One cultural reference for "Alice's Restaurant"

In addition to the Vietnam War references, and some of the drug, peace, and 
free love references, IMHO there is a little known pop cultural reference 
known only by radio insiders concerning the playing of the full Alice's 
Restaurant piece on those stations that allowed it, and especially on 
college radio back in the day, and that was, what was the DJ doing during 
the rendition and why it was played at that particular time!
