In those conservative times, he hung out with (gasp) black jazz 
musicians, and they used a certain substance that is now legalized in a 
number of states but back then, it could get you thrown in jail if you 
were caught smoking weed.  Sid was in trouble several times over his use 
of marijuana.  Plus he had a tendency to quit or get fired at a number 
of the stations were he worked.
