It looks like WGBH and WFXZ-CD just didn?t want to wait for the channel
shuffle:  WGBH:02 is still RF-19 (2.1=19.3, 2.2=19.2?) and WFXZ-CD:23(.1)
is now RF-19.1 (there is no 23.2-23.4, which is no loss, since they
have just been color bars for a while....Couldn?t they have shut those
subchannels off earlier and saved bandwith, or is there some FCC
regulation against that?).

Given this, couldn?t the WYCN-CD:13 move to WGBX?s carriage (and all
of the ?NBC Boston? rechanneling gymnastics?see separate thread response:

happen at any time?

I also see that WFXZ 24.1 is now coming from the WGBH RF channel 19 transmitter.

WFXZ?s previous signal was on RF channel 24, not 23. At one point briefly, I believe they were on 25.

I feel like the FCC should issue some sort of flow chart as they issue the
CPs, approve transactions, etc. You all know what you're talking about. The
issue is me not being able to keep up with it all.

We won't see the first phase of channel changes from the repack itself 
until Sept. 2018, with the phases then proceeding at intervals of 
several months through at least 2021 (and maybe longer).

This document doesn't show who's actually moving where, because those 
filings are still gurgling their way through the FCC. Rabbitears.info is 
the site of choice for keeping track of all that, in several forms that

There are some other twists and turns to the transition that are hard to 
fully document - for instance, T-Mobile has been paying stations on 
upper UHF channels (especially 50 and 51) to move off that spectrum 
ahead of the FCC's schedule, when channels are already available for 
them to repack. The FCC allows this, where it's technically feasible.

And of course you have to be careful with what you're tracking - 
Univision and Entravision just very quietly swapped calls and network 
affiliations on their stations in Boston and three other markets, so 
"WUNI" and the Univision affiliation are now on the Marlborough-licensed 
"channel 66" that used to be WUTF/WHUB-TV/WHSH/WVJV, while "WUTF" and 
the UniMas affiliation are now on the Worcester-licensed "channel 27" 
that used to be WUNI/WHLL/WSMW. And both stations will be repacked to 
new RF channels in the next few years, with applications to move in to 
the Newton/Needham tower farm. When it gets hard for ME to keep track, 
you know it's confusing!

I've always admired Ed Perry and once upon a time I would've wanted to be
him, but I do wonder what his play is here.

Maybe he's independently wealthy. I never got that sense. Maybe he's made a
ton of money from WATD. I'd say it's unlikely (through no fault of his
own), but what do I know.

Nostalgia is a helluva drug, I suppose.

P.S. Isn't 1460 still off the air?

No, it's not possible to design a practical combiner for two stations so 
close in frequency. They'll have to use separate towers.

If Ed Perry can manage with a single tower for 1510 -- remember, the 
Waltham facility is a four-tower directional array -- he could use a 
Valcom whip antenna like the one at WZBR 1410 in Hyde Park. It's 90 feet 
tall, costs $17,000, and doesn't need a lot of land (it's 
self-supporting). It is, however, limited to 5,000 watts. But I think any 
non-directional license for WMEX will not authroize even 5,000 watts, 
maybe just a kilowatt.

Joe Abrams, who served as news director at WCAP Lowell for a time in the
1960's, passed away in CT on December 18th at the age of 76. Joe was one of
the attendees at the WCAP 55th anniversary party live broadcast in 2006.
After leaving WCAP, he served on the Lowell School Committee in the 1970's,
then moved on to management positions with the Nashua NH and New London CT
Housing Authorities. He remained in CT after his retirement.

WCAP still has weekday live, local morning & afternoon drive talk, weekday middays are brokered local talk or third rate talk off the bird, Noon to 3:00 they carry Thom Hartmann off the bird. Nights and overnights they're still playing the same "Beatles and Before" oldies rotation that's been on since November 2007, although on Sunday, Monday and Wednesday nights from 10:00 to Midnight, "Cindy's Vinyl Vault", a local show, plays vinyl with listener requests, cue burns and all. Most of the vinyl from the WCAP Music Museum out behind the main studio.
They also carry UMass Lowell Hockey and Men's Basketball and Lowell Spinner Baseball.

Do we know if WCAP is back at 5 kW DA-2 or still at reduced power (1 kW)? My understanding was that the Harris AM5 was in trouble and that the directional array was literally under water. Hoping to hear some good tech news about my alma mater.

Yup, they?ve been off since before 9:30am yesterday morning (as
was WJDA [and, it appeared, WESX...though only for a few moments
and then they were at reduced power for at least a few minutes,
afterwards]?though 'JDA was back on by 2:30pm)?I presumed (at the
time) that them both being off was weather related.
Whatever the reason, I just checked a few minutes ago (3:50pm),
and WEZE was finally back on.

Will 98.5 keep the WBZ-FM callsign?? I don't see any good reason for 
them to do so now.? "Boston's Sports Hub" has never really been 
identified with its calls.

It?s been my understanding that WCAP (980 kHz, 5 kW DA-2) has been operating on its 1 kW back-up for a considerable period. Also, that the directional array may be compromised (and under water thanks to beavers). Can anyone shine some light on this? 

I know that when visiting the area, I could catch the signal well at the Hooksett toll, and then like a local In Manchester. Not even close now.

A few years back WCAP had a sort-of-usable signal here on the Cape at night even next to powerhouse Portland 970 WZAN.

In recent times, it is typically in a melange with stations in Troy NY, Montreal, Washington DC, and even (upon occasion, per sunspot activity) Cuba, Colombia, and Brazil.

I have not been able to enjoy Dick Summer's midnight show in a long time.

The WCAP signal is not as strong as it used to be, and I do believe the directional array is out of sorts. On night pattern it should not put a usable signal in South Nashua. It doesn't put much of a usable night signal down towards the northern Boston suburbs most nights. Some nights the co-channel 980 in Troy overpowers them in South Tewksbury. Although a few weeks ago I was in Manchester during the day and I was able to hear it with a usable signal. 

I'm not sure what the situation is with the transmitter plant, except for the fact the generator at the transmitter site hasn't worked in a long time. When there's a power outage in that area, they're off the air.

I suspect the basement level of the WCAP radio shack where the Allis Chalmers diesel generators live has been likewise affected by backwater flooding. It?s a shame.

Ike and Maurice Cohen were considered frugal with the sizzle but the former engineer, Ike Cohen, bought the steak in 1980 when he put the 5 kW on air at the Totman Road site that abuts the State Forest. The 4 x 256 towers (2 day, 3 night) I?m well-cleared land we?re fed by a new Harris AM5. (I joined the station not long after and remained in various capacities until 2K.)

When Ike passed in the mid-1990s, the site began to fall into disrepair. Sadly, it appears, that under new ownership in 2011 did nothing to avert the trajectory. 

The Bauer 1 kW likely in full-time use, was the primary when it was located on Loon Hill in Dracut. We rarely fired it up except for Harris maintenance. But when I jocked the evening shift, we had a good signal south of Boston. But on the Bauer, it was hash. It?s possible the station is shooting out of one stick day and night at a kilowatt.
