For some time, I've been wondering about the status of WBZ-TV as a 
holdout offering only one digital TV channel in its stream, whereas the 
other Boston stations that I can receive here have secondary channels.   
Well, that status has ended.

Channel 4.2 made its Boston soft launch on February 26, airing with a 
13-week stunt of all-binge programming, scheduled to run until May 25 
when the CBS "Decades" channel starts its regular programming.

And they're not the only ones.  Believe it or not, WMJX-HD2 is still playing all-Christmas music.

Their former "smooth jazz" format was my wife's favorite over-the-air station.  No more.  We actually switched from an HD radio (Sony XDR-S3HD) to an Internet radio (Grace Digital Mondo) in our bedroom as a result.  Aside from a ten-year-old Tivoli Audio PAL (which only gets used during power-out emergencies) and the A/V receiver in our living room (which has an AM/FM tuner built in, but I've never used it; it doesn't even have an antenna attached to it), we no longer have a tuner capable of receiving broadcast radio in active use in our house.  I would never have believed that possible ten or even five years ago.

Of course, the business side of radio has long considered broadcast to
be an "out of home" medium.  That's why you had all those radio
companies snapping up billboard faces -- the thought was that these
were reaching the same audience as radio advertising.

As for me, I still have my HD tuner attached to the receiver
downstairs -- used almost exclusively for Prairie Home Companion on
Saturday evenings.  I still travel with a bag full of audio equipment.
But in my regular workaday life, I rarely ever end up turning
terrestrial broadcast radio on: the few podcast subscriptions I have

completely, or put on satellite.  Terrestrial radio has this nasty
habit of going into a stop set immediately after I turn it on.

I do on occasion put on WBZ but I'm always disappointed as their
traffic reports are never helpful.  (And then there's that stupid CBS
Evening News simulcast -- are they still doing that?)

That actually makes some amount of sense.  By 7:30 the newsroom is
largely running on fumes anyway.  (Consider that most of those people
went on the air 2:00 and probably started work at noon or even
earlier.)  It was all repeats from earlier in the afternoon anyway.
Back in the "good old days" that was the first hour of the Brudnoy
show....

For the times I'm unable to get home before 6:30, or out of town, but in the 
car and within skywave range, I really appreciate WBZ running the CBS 
Evening News at 6:30pm. And, It's a good break from the repetition of the 
regional and local news. .Wish that more stations would do the same, even on 
FM would be great.

Even though I really think that AM HD, in general, is mostly a useless 
experiment, sometimes, interestingly, WBZ's AM HD comes in for an extended 
period on skywave when I'm 200-700 miles from the station.

Daytime programming-OK, Traffic & Wx-OK, Dan Rhea-OK, has interesting guests 
sometimes, but he could be a lot better-- sometimes he's short, impatient or 
aloof with callers, Bradley J-Surprisingly Good--probably the best overnite 
host on WBZ for a long time. Bradley can talk inteligently about most 
anything, and he's not rude to callers and he's not too short ,or too long, 
but usually just right with callers. Many of you all may have heard him many 
times on WBCN, but here in Western Mass, we don't get WBCN, so I never heard 
Bradley J on the radio until he started on WBZ. The other overnite hosts are 
OK also. The early AM/overnite paid commercial vitamin show, etc, are a joke 
and should be taken off. They cause a tune-out for a BZ regular like me and 
sometimes it's quite a while before I tune back in. So, those commercial 
shows represent a net loss for WBZ.

Very, Very few stations exist like WBZ anymore that do at least, some, real 
time news and service to the community for the majority of their air time. 
Most cities do not have any dependable local news radio station--AM or FM--  
today. I Was listening to WSM, Nashville, last night and there's another 
rare radio stations with some quality programming. Someday all of those 
stations like WBZ and WSM, and WCBS, etc, may just dissapear. And, nothing 
against these new ways of communicating, but radio stations' service won't 
be replaced by any IPhone, or podcast, or internet feed. Then, (as has 
already happened a few times) when there's a storm, hurricane or blizzard, 
and cable & electricity is out, and the cell/Braodband site batteries have 
run out of juice or crashed, there won't be any local news or information 
stations to service the public.

He used to complain RKO signal faded west of Kenmore Sq. WCRN and WCAP can

Wow...wonder what the arrangement was with 1510AM?  Cancellation with 7 days notice?

1510AM used the occasion of Howie's arrival to reclaim the WMEX calls, and put up a bunch of billboards.  They were also running spots on the air soliciting advertising for The Howie Carr Show.

I kinda feel like 1510AM got screwed.
