Channels 4 and 5 are on this tower, and I know Channel 2 at least used to be (are they still?). Turning around the view, I see two towers. The closer one I think may be 1165 Chestnut Street, which I think is the one that at least used to be called FM-128 - it used to be Channel 5's tower when it was WHDH-TV, before the license was given to WCVB. The one in the distance is the Channel 7 tower on Tower Road. Assuming these are right, 140 Cabot Street (which would be, or at least used to be, known as the Candelabra) would be to the right of these, but the view here is blocked by the hill and the billboard. -Shawn ________________________________________ From: Boston-Radio-Interest [boston-radio-interest-bounces@lists.BostonRadio.org] on behalf of Rob Landry [011010001@interpring.com] Sent: Monday, November 10, 2014 6:45 AM To: Paul B. Any news on that Larry? They might be thinking of WBZ-TV. CBS sold most of its towers a few years back to Richland Towers, which in turn was bought last year by American Tower Company. ATC thus owns three of the four tall towers - Cedar Street (WBZ etc.), Chestnut Street ("FM 128") and the candelabra. I have a couple of quibbles. 1. You mention WNAC-TV and WNAC-FM arriving in the early 1960s. As I've mentioned before, I believe that 98.5 was WRKO-FM by that time, though only FM listeners knew that. I have a very distinct memory of getting my first FM radio in December 1958 and hearing an automated WRKO-FM ID played over the simulcast of WNAC AM programs. I know that nobody has been able to verify this for the Boston Radio Archives, but I know what I heard. I was in 8th grade at the time, getting an FM radio was an exciting day, and I even know the exact date, 5 December. Because I marked it on the calendar and observed the anniversary for several years. 2. You mention the Kaiser-GLobe "consortium" (I'd call it a partnership or joint venture) putting channel 56 back on as WKBG in 1966. I know the Archives also gives that date, but how certain are we of that date? I'm not as certain of this as I am of #1, but I think this is too early. I seem to remember all three of the Harvey Labs stations being sold at once to Kaiser-Globe, taken off the air, and then brought back in their new identities. But I also remember hearing WXHR classical programming on 740 AM, which became WXHR (AM), on my car radio while I was in law school, which I started in fall 1967. I could be wrong on this one, but I think it was later than 1966. Once WKBG-TV was up and running they then turned WXHR-AM into WCAS. and then later in 1967 would flip WXHR-FM into WJIB. In retrospect it is curious that all 3 Kaiser-Globe stations has separate studios. 56 was in Allston. WCAS was in Central Sq Cambridge and WJIB wound up on the waterfront. The stations were never bundled as a package and all 3 would eventually wind up with separate owners. On Tue, Nov 11, 2014 at 1:19 AM, A Joseph Ross wrote: > Interesting detail. I don't know what rules applied to TV stations, but it used to be that radio stations had to have main studios in their communities of license, which was Boston for WJIB and Cambridge for WCAS. There were exceptions; when I joined WUNR/WBOS (both Brookine) in 1980, both stations had their main studios at the WUNR transmitter site in Newton. Exactly when they changed the radio stations is still unclear to me, but this makes a bit more sense. I was pretty sure the radio changes took place later than 1966. The timing of the television changeover was less clear to me because at the time we didn't have a TV with a UHF tuner, so I couldn't follow UHF stations. Someone who runs a howiecarrshowfans messageboard said maybe they are trying to sell the show as really three hours, to stations who can place it "between Rush and Levin", 3-6 pm.When Howie was on WRKO, and even now, they ran Levin 7 to 10 pm. Sometimes Howie filled in for Levin and he'd get Sandy to do the final hour of his show, then went into another room to do Levin which really runs from 6 to 9 pm. Might stations opt now to delete the final hour and run something else at 6 pm? If Money Matters has another studio to spare, Howie could potentially still fill in for Levin. Indeed, a bad move. While it could be good for those who missed the first hour due to work, there's no potential "Massachusetts only hour" as he'd done in the past (even though stations outside the state also carried it). What's interesting is it was said Tony Garcia's Global Media was said to be syndicating Howie but suddenly last week it was said Kurt (Ken?) Carberry of WCRN was handling syndication. Did he drop Global? The show for now is confined to New England except for a small AM in Shell Lake, Wisconsin. So far no word of it being a "national" show. My source also heard that the show will be tweaked to have more talk, less humor and less music, which IMHO may turn off some of the loyal Loren & Wally listeners. As of late last night Tom's bio was gone from WROR's website, but the link to many of his parody songs and "Men From Maine" episodes was still on the website. Tom has had a fairly long run in the Boston market. IIRC wasn't he one of the jocks on WCOZ back in the 1970's? He was also paired with Jess Cain on WHDH towards the end of Cain's long reign as morning host. If you have trouble sending to the list and get a bounce message back from your mail system, please forward the message to me at this address so I can investigate. (Boring technical details: I've configured the mail system on the bostonradio.org server to support STARTTLS and published a TLSA record for mail to lists.bostonradio.org and plain bostonradio.org. However, my other server, which also handles bostonradio.org mail, does not support STARTTLS and does not have TLSA records. As DANE for SMTP is just now starting to be deployed, most servers are not going to care about this, but I'm interested in learning about exceptions. This uses the same certificate as the https://lists.bostonradio.org Web server, which I bought last January specifically with the intent of doing this, but just now got around to it.) -GAWollman From mward@iname.com Sat Nov 22 16:13:32 2014 From: mward@iname.com (Mike Ward) Date: Sat, 22 Nov 2014 16:13:32 -0500 Subject: just an FYI for my friends on this list In-Reply-To: References: <002401d0066b$1916db20$4b449160$@comcast.net> <5470B9E9.4060203@donnahalper.com> <25cea966-7fd1-4172-94eb-93b20183a06c@email.bluemailapp.com> Message-ID: Good thoughts coming your way, Donna.
