Baseball radio in the Northeast

In the late 80s/early 90s I worked at a station that was a Bruins affiliate,
and they had the worst satellite feed I've ever heard.  At the beginning of
the season it would be OK, but by January or so the signal had deteriorated
to the point where it was nothing but static...our board ops generally had
to get a phone patch from WPLM.  Someone told me that they were reducing
their uplink power mid-season and this was the cause.  Anyone know the real
deal on this?  It happened this way every season that I worked there.
