Closed shops were banned by the Taft-Hartley Act in the 1940s.  Union 
shops, however, are permitted (except in states which ban them).  The 
difference is that with a closed shop, you can't get a job unless you 
belong to the union first.  With a union shop, you can get the job, 
but you have so many days to join the union.
