Well put.  One of the last, if not the last, of the great national radio voices of yesteryear . . . which brings me to a question:  Are there others still around?  TV still has Don Pardo, Mike Wallace, and Andy Rooney, but offhand I can't think of any "legends" of radio who were around in the '40s and are with us still.
