How to re-scan depends on which converter box or digital TV you have.  The instructions that came with either one are the best reference.

The coverage maps available at www.dtv.com are probably the best predictor of how reception will change, although terrain here in the northeast is so variable that sometimes the only way to find out is to try it.  The online maps show analog coverage, digital coverage, and specific known areas that will either gain or lose reception as a result of the switch to digital.
