Whatever the actual schedules, the Record was CALLED the morning 
paper and the American was CALLED the evening paper.  I believe I 
sometimes heard it referred to as the Evening American.
 
I seem to recall that after the newspaper strike in the late 1950s 
(1957, I think), the American was the first paper back after the 
strike, and it came out around noon.
