To be fair, big business isn't the only haven for short-sightedness.  
Many people make the same kinds of financial mistakes in their 
day-to-day personal lives:

1. Buying the cheaper ink cartridge for 2/3 the cost, but only half the 
ink.  Costs less today, but, in the long run, they pay 33% more.

2. Buying a car based solely on monthly payment without regard for the 
ultimate cost of the car after making 5 years of payments.
