Clippy (and its other incarnations) was hardly ubiquitous.  Most people I know discovered the way to turn it off, or turn it into something more endearing, like a cat, which would act like a cat (IOW, sleep most of the time and not bother anyone).  In Office 2007, the Office Assistants (Clippy et al.) are gone.
