That 1970s $80k, would probably be around $400k to $500k in 2007
dollars. Back in those days, gas was a quater-a-gallon, the median US
home price was $23K [it's around $245k today], and the average family
car could be bought new for around $4k or so, vs around $25k+ today.

In other words, as opposed to today, that early 1970s $80k could buy
an upper class lifestyle.
