Network television and local television are very different. When someone is a national
personality, they make a lot of money, but their presence also makes a lot of money for their
employers, and being unceremoniously let go would generate a lot of bad national publicity.
There's competition for people like Katie Kouric, for example, when there are even rumors of
their contract being up.
