Apparently, when ABC negotiated the TV rights for
'Private Ryan' Spielberg made the network
contractually agree that the film could not be edited
/ modified in any manner for TV broadcast.

It's just a case of the old golden rule:
"He who has the gold, writes the rules" :-)
