Opponet of FCC rules engages in media consolidtaion

Former radio guy Al Diamon now writes a political column for the Portland
Phoenix. In his column this week, he points out that while the owners of
the Portland Press Herald campaign against FCC rules, they are engaging in
the kind of media consolidation that they claim to oppose by trying to buy
weekly newspapers around Portland.

These suburban weeklies have grown considerably in recent years as the Press
Herald has greatly cut back on their coverage of local news. This trend
started before Blethen bought the papers but Blethen made further cut backs.
