Oops...you forget one thing: in Boston, WBUR gets phenomenal
ratings with a less-than-full-power signal and a directional
antenna...and for about 4 hours daily, another station in
town with a currently grandfathered 100kw signal carries
identical programming. WNYC AM&FM has a cume of 1-million
listeners (1 in 21 ratio) in metro New York. A public
FM in Philadelphia picked up classical (at least during the day)
when WFLN went bye-bye and does better than the 95.7
signal now with a mind-numbing
pop format. Sometimes excellence and intelligence IS
marketable (the Wall Street Journal almost matches USA Today, and
I'm not denigrating the latter). WBZ-AM isn't perfect,
but it's better than it would be if WBUR weren't around!
