1510/"what are those call-letters?" (Re: Fwd: Herald: Is WWZN dragging down SNR?)

I could see a college operating maybe a 250 to
1000 ND AM'er. It's been done. But anything of higher
wattage with more than a several tower array, well....
you're talking serious bucks. No college would be
able to afford something like 1510/Boston. 1510 (with
whatever its' call-letters are, this week), forget it!
If the powerbill doesn't wipe you out, the
maintenance costs and the rent of the site itself
WILL! This is one of the those antenna arrays that
should have never been built in the first place. The
start-up costs and the RFI factor were extremely
prohibitive. That's why the station went silent in
the first place. To this day, this station hasn't
made a dime since the WIMMEX days.
Today, 1510 (and I hate to say this) can only
survive if a major player (no pun intended) were to
come and buy it. I personally would love to see 1510
go the way of WWKB and WSAI and really crank out the
"real oldies" format. A second sports station can't
cut it here in Boston. WEEI is the de-facto sports
station in town. Now, look at New York. WFAN has the
market pretty much sewn in. I don't think 1050 (ESPN)
will ever be a major factor, ratings wise. But that
station is, for the most part, an infomercial for
ESPN/TV so ratings are not important. And 620,
well...... it's dead.
      Oh, well. 73.
