>In today's Herald, Dean Johnson writes that according
>to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, WWZN's parent company,
>The Sporting News, is going through
>financial difficulties-- and one major reason may be
>their Boston station, which has had to pay a

I've always believed that no matter how rich you are on paper,
you still can't afford to run through millions and millions of dollars
with little return. Steve Ballmer and Paul Allen may have
net worths in billions, but a lot of that is stock that could
decline simply by the act of cashing out (lots of shares for sale increases supply). Eventually, each
has to use G.A.A.P. with regard to their sports and media
operations. If I remember correctly, one of the technical
types posting here theorized that WWZN was spending huge
amounts of money in rent and electricity for their tower site
at the Waltham/Belmont line, making it difficult for a
station with minimal listenership to break even. Their
number one product, Celtics games, can't be very profitable
since there are costs associated with broadcast rights and on-air production.
Just like short people, WWZN has no right to exist really...
Vulcan should just turn in the license and sell the towers for
scrap metal. Then maybe the Wizzer in Grenfield could go full-time.
