Re: Bring Back "Heritahe" Calls

Most of 1150's history as WCOP preceded my arrival in Boston in 1956. However,
the station's country days occured after my arrival. Still, I never think of
1150 as a country station. Heck, I don't think I thought of it as a country
station when it was one. Unless Salem undergoes a sudden--umm--conversion, the
company is not going to abandon its formula of finding niches that pay
handsomely despite small or nonexistent audiences. WCOP would be good calls for
1150 simply because they are historic, they are apparently available for AM
from an organization that seems to be consonent with Salem's objectives, and
because Salem arguably has a tradition of reverence for historic calls.

My prediction for 1150 under Salem is new lows in market share coupled with new
highs in profits. The prediction stands regardless of the calls. But I still
think WCOP would be the best choice.

Salem could also consider splicing the old Yankee Network News signature (News
while it IS news...The Yankee Network News Service is on the air) onto the
beginning of the SRN hourly news, which 1150 will probably carry. Since there
is no Yankee Network now, they could leave out "Network." The 1150 audience, if
any, will be in a demographic that remembers that signature--even though I
don't think it was ever heard on 1150. It's just that the signature is part of
a period piece from the same era as the WCOP calls.
