Arnie Ginsburg interview on WMBR!
Sorry for such short notice, this was a last-minute confirmation.
It will be an honor to welcome legendary Boston Rock'n'Roll DJ Arnie
"Woo-Woo" Ginsburg to the WMBR studios at MIT for a live half-hour
interview on the "Lost & Found" show tomorrow (Wednesday, May 14) at
12:30 PM. Listen in greater Boston, most of eastern Massachusetts, and
southernmost NH at 88.1 FM, or listen live on-line with Real Player at
http://www.wmbr.org/wmbr.ram
Serving as Boston's alternative to narrow playlists of commercial "Oldies"
and "Classic Rock" stations now for 20 years, the "Lost & Found" show
features "lost" music of the 1960's and early 70's every weekday from 12
noon - 2 PM. Different DJ's each weekday range from rarely-heard early
60's Pop, Rock'n'Roll and Soul to late 60's/early 70's "underground"
psychedelic.
Arnie Ginsburg will be joining Wednesday "Lost & Found" host Larry Azrin
and myself to talk about a concert he's hosting this Saturday May 17'th
at the Regent Theatre in Arlington, as well as Boston music and radio in
the 60's.
The concert, "Live At The Surf", is a reunion of Boston Rock'n'Roll bands
who frequently played at the fabled Surf Nantasket in the mid 1960's. The
concert will be headlined by Barry (Tashian) and The Remains, the band who
had the honor of opening for The Beatles when they played the Boston area.
Also performing will be a special 60's Boston band "supergroup" assembled
for the occasion including original members of The Rondells, The Pilgrims,
The Ramrods, Moulty of The Barbarians, Scott "The Cat" Anderson, Myles
Connor of The Wild Ones, and "Golden" Joe Baker. This will all be MC'ed,
as these bands were at the Surf over 35 years ago, by Arnie Ginsburg.
More information about the concert is at http://www.regenttheater.com.
This concert will serve as a benefit for the building of a facility to
house the Boston Rock & Roll Museum, which now exists only virtually at
http://www.dirtywater.com.
Some Arnie Ginsburg history (off the top of my head, I'm sure some will
correct this):
Arnie Ginsburg is one of Boston's pioneering Rock'n'Roll DJ's. His first
programs were on the old WBOS-AM 1600 (now WUNR) in 1956 when, as a radio
engineer, he reportedly had to go on the air live to fill time when a
scheduled program did not air. His upbeat Rock'n'Roll music, zany style,
live sound effects, offbeat comical routines and wacky promotions quickly
became a hit, and in 1957 he moved to the original WMEX-AM (1510) for a
famous ten-year stint with his very popular evening "Night Train" Top 40
Rock'n'Roll show, his nickname "Woo-Woo" derived from the sound of the
train whistle in the theme, and imitated live on the air with his slide
whistle.
(The original 1510 WMEX-AM is now WWZN "The Zone" Sports talk, though
retro-oldies WMEX-FM 106.5 is now playing up in Rochester, NH).
In 1967, Arnie moved over to new (and slicker) Top 40 competitor WRKO (now
talk), and after a brief on-air stint, went into radio management and
ownership. Arnie was briefly management at Boston's then-"FM underground"
rock station WBCN in the early 70's, and in the mid 70's became part-owner
of "easy listening" station WWEL, which shortly thereafter went to the top
of the ratings with a call letter change to WXKS and format change to
"disco" eventually morphing to contemporary Top 40 as "Kiss 108". ("Kiss"
was later sold to a succession of progressively larger, increasingly
national outfits who were all eventually swallowed up by mega-conglomerate
Clear Channel). Arnie was also part-owner of short-lived local rock video
TV station "V-66" (now Spanish) in mid-80's with Boston radio programmer
John H. Garabedian.
Now in his mid 70's, Arnie "Woo-Woo" Ginsburg is coming out of retirement
to host the concert this weekend featuring local bands he helped promote
in the mid 1960's, and I'll be honored for him, one of my original
inspirations for becoming interested in radio, to join Larry Azrin and me
live on WMBR tomorrow.
