I'm a subscriber to The Atlantic, so his passing meant a lot to me;
Emily Rooney led with the Kelly obit on Greater Boston's "Beat the
Press", and later Gwen Ifill mentioned it on "Washington Week".
The boston commercial outlets barely mentioned it: The Atlantic, while 
operating out of Boston, is a high-toned national/international mag
(the lead story in the new issue is about the shaky status of the house of Saud)
so it would tend to be played down here, just like the BSO musician Harry
Ellis Dickson's death...if he weren't the Pops' concert master (the
equivalent of an assistant conductor), the commercial media would have given
it ZERO play.
Kelly was in a sense local to the Washington, DC market because he was a 
regular contributor to the Post.
