Actually, it's not as unusual as you may think. Here
in the Hudson Valley of New York (Poughkeepsie, to be
exact), until about a month ago Cablevision also had a
local news operation, and they put on daily 6 PM and
10 PM hour long newscasts. They also carried Marist
College athletic events on tape delay as well. But, a
couple months or so ago, the same thing happened that
is occurring right now in Lowell. When financial
times got tough for Cablevision, all local
programming, except for one public affairs program,
went out the window. Its really sad, because now the
most local news you can get for this area is either
from New York City or from Albany, depending on where
in the valley you live and what network affiliates are
carried.

P.S - As far as I know, if you live in the few areas
around here covered by Time Warner cable, you still do
have a local in-house produced newscast, it was just
Cablevision that scrapped theirs
