It occurs to me that someone on this list may know the answer to this question.

I recently discovered that for some reason, when my stereo system is turned off, there is still 
a hum coming out of the right-channel speakers.  I have speakers in several rooms, and I 
hear this in any room where the speakers are turned on, even when the system is off.
