Excuse me, Miss Pronunciation?

Speaking of pronunciation (pun intended :-) I was down in Connecticut
watching the Red Sox wallop the Yankees on Monday via the YES ("Yankee
Entertainment Service"? - gag me) cable channel and I heard consistently
different ways of saying both Yankees' and Red Sox players' names. By
which I mean, different from how the guys on Fox25 usually pronounce them.

Being honest here, the differences between the two channels on the Yankees'
names was pretty small, but some of the Red Sox names sounded pretty harsh
("Jason VARY-tek"?? I even heard a "NO-mer Garciaparra" slip out
once) Is this just evidence that Bostonians talk weird, New Yorkers talk
weird, or just that the Yankees are determined to be obnoxious to everyone?
