no stee-rike!

Reportedly, the sides in the Major League Baseball
labor negotiations have reached agreement, with a
press conference scheduled for 1 pm today. Supposedly,
the deal would give owners economic constraints while
players were assured no teams would be contracted,
plus revenue sharing would be implemented, but
gradually.

What does this mean for radio and TV? Playing out the
last month of the season and the playoffs means they
won't lose ad revenue, although I think Major League
Baseball would have had to refund broadcast entities
if the season had come to a halt (Fox, for one, would
wind up getting a big refund had there been a strike
wiping out the rest of the season and the playoffs).

And a strike would have turned off a lot of fans
(well, maybe...), resulting in lower ratings in the
future. Some say that football has overtaken baseball
as the national pastime; had there been a strike,
it could have been disastrous for the major leagues
(especially with fans still upset over the '94
walkout).
