That's always been the case. New talent has to start someplace with very
little (or no) pay. They prove themselves and move up to higher paying
gigs.

The real problem lies with the smaller markets. There are less and less
WEIM's, WLLH's, WCCM's, etc...for a new person to start out (and make
mistakes) and learn the craft.

Radio stations have been staying on the air more reliably in the last 10-15
years more than I ever remember.
All this while stations are paring down the # of engineers on staff.
Let's face it...we don't need engineers to board op...we don't need
engineers to "operate the transmitter". Transmitters are much more reliable
and stable than ever......we have indeed LESS need for engineers than we did
in days past.
