Why is it that only the Bible-thumper churches get involved in
controversies like this?  I don't ever read about Methodist or Jewish or
Congregational organizations needing to "spread the word of God" like
this.

I suspect that it goes to the background of the ministry leaders.  You
probably can measure it along a scale of tradional to evangelical.  If
you dial surf while traveling the Midwest, South, etc., Christian
evangelical stations are all over the place (and not just non-comms.)
