Re: FCC Orders All TV's To Have Digital Tuners By 2007
Yes, a correct term is AM _band_ IBOC DAB. As you point out, the modulation
is not AM. If you are going to be a stickler, though, you can't use IBOC as
the noun because it's an adjective. But AM band IBOC DAB is a mouthful and
you can't stop people from shortening it to AM IBOC. MW IBOC DAB is also
correct but the problem with it is that when you say MW in the US, 99% of
the people haven't a clue about what you mean.
The whole argument is academic, however, until the iBiquity AM-band system
is given a proper and decent burial and we can check every week to make sure
that "yep, it's still dead." The iBiquity systems are the only IBOC DAB
systems under consideration in the US. The AM-band system is theoretically
unsound and doesn't work because the proponents insist that they have 40 kHz
of bandwidth to play in--which is untrue. Even the NRSC says the AM-band
system won't work at night because of first-adjacent skywave interference. I
have news for the NRSC; the system won't work during the day either. No
amount of wishful thinking or propaganda can change that. Maybe if 80% or
more of the AM stations in the US went dark, there would be adequate
bandwidth to accommodate the signals, but there would still be reception
problems. Perhaps there is another digital system that _could_ work. The
French Digial Radio Mondiale might be such a system. However, you have to
suspect a system whose proponents call it an open system and then fail to
reveal even the most basic information about how it works because the
proponents need to protect their intellectual property(!) This is an
argument worthy of Bill Gates.
