On Weekends, the networks (for some bizzare reason) feed their 6:30 newscasts
at 6 p.m. They feed again at 6:30. So, the local affiliates have the option of
taking it live or tape-delaying.

It comes in handy when a network event (sports, usually) runs late. Then, they
do a shortened newscast to fit whatever remains of the 6:00-6:30 hole. The
affil. tapes it, and plays back at 6:40 or whenever the regular-length local
news ends. (The network fees the full-length news then at 6:30 for the rest of
the nation to do with as they wish...)

If it's done the same in radio as it is in TV, the show is sent in advance 
by satellite and recorded by each station.  Each station then rolls the 
tape (or hard drive server) at it's air time for that program.  As for why 
the Boston stations would roll a second or two later than other stations, I 
don't know.
