Re: RE:FMand AM legal IDs(was: WJPZ-FM Syracuse)
Cooper-
The legal ID is determined by the callsign. Now, I know you know that, but
there is a difference between WXYZ and WXYZ-FM. If you browse through the
FCC database you'll note that some FM stations are listed in the format WXYZ
while others are WXYZ-FM. The same is true of TV stations. If the "FM" is
shown on your license (and listed in the database) it is part of your calls.
If not, it's optional to use the service (i.e. FM) in the calls.
Let's assume you're asking because of a situation at your station. Your
calls are "WXAL-FM," and not "WXAL" (which, as you probably know, belong to
a station in Alabama). As such, your station should be identified as
"WXAL-FM , Addison." This is, to the best of my knowledge, the official
word; I have no idea if the Commission has or would ever cite a station for
dropping the "FM" in their callsign.
That said, I've found that what I was taught is mostly -- but not always --
right. If I'm giving you bad info, I trust someone else on the list will
correct me.
By the way, congrats on the new gig.
