Re: WJLT
If WBIX is operating more than two hours past local
sunset from its day site, it's a bit of a surprise that
Langer has gotten authorization for the station to
remain on 24 hours. Long ago, when it was dark, 1060 had
either an application or a CP for 3.3W-N ND from the
Sewell St, Ashland site, from which it operated before
it went dark and from which it, at one point--pre Langer-
-proposed to operate again. The then owners of 890
refused to share the site and, until Langer struck a
deal with Fairbanks to use the WKOX site, it looked as
if the Natick station was headed for oblivion. I guess
that, until now, Langer never figured that he could do
enough with 3.3W to make it worthwhile to stay on the
air at night with such low power.
Conceivably, though, WBIX has been authorized more than
3.3W at night from the WKOX towers. WBIX now runs
significant power (maybe as much as 500W) between 6:00
AM and local sunrise as well as between local sunset and
Philadephia sunset (almost always just 15 minutes
later). Perhaps this means that WBIX now has authority
to use its critical-hours pattern pre-sunrise and post-
sunset. If so, the station might have authorization to
operate with that pattern all night. I have speculated
repeatedly about just how much power the FCC might
authorize for a directional nighttime operation on 1060
from WKOX's towers. My guess is tens of watts, which
would be enough to cover much of Framingham with a
listenable signal.
There is no evidence that Langer will actually build out
his CPs for a 650 operation with 2 kW-D DA-D from Sewell
St or a dual-site full-time 1060 operation that would
have WBIX operating nights from Sewell St with 2.5 kW-N
DA-N.
