Falmouth is indeed its own political subdivision. Check out http://www.town.falmouth.ma.us/allabout.html for more.

However, Hyannis is indeed one of Barnstable's numerous villages. Woods Hole is not an individual town, it's also a village, though it does have its own post office. Imagine having WNTN licensed to Auburndale or Newton Centre instead of plain ol' Newton.
