This actually involves a change in convention with regard to the spelling of Chinese names.  Mao 
Zedong and Beijing actually better reflect the Chinese pronunciation.

Which reminds me of the problem Iranian newspapers had covering the 1996 election in the 
United States.  Seems the name "Dole," transliterated properly into Farsi, means "penis."
