media coverage; NFL and baseball

The enormity of the terrorist attacks could easily be
seen and heard on TV and radio. Wall to wall,
commercial-free coverage not only on news or talk
stations but music stations as well; WQSX going back
and forth between AP Network News and local cut-ins
from sister WRKO; WBCN and WODS simulcasting sister
WBZ, and normally sports-talk WEEI doing non-stop
news and talk about the situation.

My real job, with the post office, is a night shift in
a place with very spotty AM reception. Thanks to the
likes of WQSX for carrying the news coverage. My
co-workers and I sorted mail and heard all the news
coverage as we did.

Last night WRKO pre-empted Dr. Laura to go live and
local with Moe Lauzier, and Ted Sarandis' WEEI show
was about the terrorist attacks, not Red Sox or
Patriots talk. This morning the NFL decided to scrap
its Sunday, Sunday night, and Monday night games.
Wise move, given travel restrictions (closed
airports),
concern over attacks at stadiums, and the general mood
that the country was not quite ready for trivial
(by comparison) sports events.

Last I heard, baseball was still hoping to get going
again tomorrow but with the NFL cancelling its weekend
games, I wonder if MLB will follow suit.

Cable TV still has the majority of its channels doing
event coverage (sometimes even importing signals from
the CBC and BBC), and the channels which are running
entertainment shows have scrolls at the bottom
expressing their sadness and shock, and sometimes
advising viewers to tune to news channels. (ESPN,
for example, covered how the sports world reacted
to this, with a graphic on the bottom of the screen
saying "Tune to ABC-TV for news coverage", etc.
