Re: Local Radio News (Was Re :Manchester, NH 7-5-0 AM Coming to a radio dial near you?

For some reason--maybe because it had to have been
improvised on the spot--a particular Bob and Ray bit
sticks in my mind. Took place on NBC Monitor CA 1953
(Monitor...going places and doing things...You're on the
Monitor beacon...take five).

Anyone else old enough to remember the prerecorded
celebrity interviews that were distributed on 16-
in "electrical transcriptions" back in the 50s? On one
side you had the complete interview--questions (usually
posed by an interviewer with _some_ name recognition)
and answers. On the other side were just the celeb's
answers with pauses between them long enough to deliver
the questions. A script was provided on paper so that
local DJs could ask the questions and the celeb would
appear to answer them. It took _a lot_ of practice to
make these "interviews" sound anything but totally
ridiculous. And needless to say, _a lot_ could go wrong.

On this particular monitor broadcast,
the "interviewer's" nightmare occurred.
The "interviewer" missed a question, and from that point
forward, the answers preceded the questions.

Twenty minutes or so later, Bob and Ray did their
version of such a prerecorded interview gone awry. Of
course, for listeners who had missed the genuine
article, B+R had to set the stage and provide a behind-
the-scenes description of how such "interviews" were
conducted. In any event, as hilarious as the original
had been, the Bob and Ray version was even funnier.

I guess this posting is sort of a Bob and Ray bit in
itself. You'll just have to accept that the bit _was_
funny.
