I was under the impression it's "Acting" until elected in one's own right. (As opposed to 'interum')

The state web site and the highway signs speedily changed upon her
ascendancy; they don't say "acting", but many reporters do.
Did we go through a similar confusion when Mr. Weld left office in
favor of Mr. Cellucci?
