The interpreter is the assistant trainer of the Pawtucket Red Sox.  He was
asked to travel with the team for the first few weeks of the season to help
Nomo and Ohka.  I got the impression that he would not be with the team all
year, which seems pretty weird.  I would think the team would want an
interpreter to help the manager and coaches communicate effectively with
their players.  The media is only a secondary consideration.  I would also
think the team would pay for English language classes during the season for
any players who do not speak the language.  The team will certainly function
better and be more cohesive if everyone can communicate.  It is weird to me
that Nomo, who has played in the major leagues in the U.S. for six years,
does not speak English.  I understand that some immigrants do not have
access to the resources necessary to learn English, but that is certainly no
the case with a major league baseball player.  I would also think more
coaches would try to learn Spanish because of the large number of Spanish
speaking players in organized baseball.
