There are such communities: Madawaska, Fort Kent, Eagle Lake.  All in 
northern Aroostook County.  Even in those towns almost everyone also speaks 
English.  Lots of people speak French in places like Lewiston and Biddeford, 
but not a majority.  Maybe in 1950 a majority spoke French in such cities, 
but not today.

And we have electricity north of Portland these days, too!
