CONtrol of ELectronic RADiation

President Truman established the CONELRAD [CONtrol of ELectronic (I don't 
think it was the more correct "ELectomagnetic") RADiation] system in 1951 
to "provide emergency alert to the public."
I am "quite a bit" younger than Dan. ;) I heard very little from the tests 
in the 50's from my home then in Rockport Mass. As Dan indicates if you 
missed receiving even one of the stations broadcasts you would not 
understand the multiplexed "intelligence." I still have a "3-way" portable 
(115VAC/115VDC/both A&B batteries) with the triangle circumscribed in a 
circle at 640 and 1240 kilocycles on the dial.

As we close the 20th Century A.D. with one last year (2000) let me join 
with my favorite radio station locally-owned WPLM-FM 99.1 with perhaps the 
largest playlist in the free world playing a unique blend of great music by
