Re: WHIL and country
I can not recall much about FM before 1960 simply because it was next to
impossible to buy a FM receiver back then. I was given a Zenith
Trans-oceanic radio for Christmas in 1960 and it covered everything EXCEPT
FM. However that was the radio that gave me my "bug" about broadcasting and
changed my life,
WHIL AM meanwhile did have one program that was listened by an awful lot of
people back then, and it was called "Racing from Suffolk Downs". This was
back in the days before the state lottery and the street number was played
heavily by blue collar types......... WHIL would broadcast the 7th race
live, and Babe Rubenstein "the track announcer" would carefully announce the
other payoffs of the day.
For those old enough to remember, the old 7 Races "edition" of the
Record-American would then hit the streets around 6:30 PM and be snapped up
quickly, because the street number was devised by the payouts at the horse
track.
That is way the it was back then, and while I won't say it was the "good old
days", I do miss the corner drug store where everybody DID know your name.
